During the 29th World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) meeting, Guatemala was elected as a new member to represent Latin America on said committee, along with other countries in the region. This appointment gives it a participatory leadership in a high-level committee, where decisions are made jointly with the World Bank and terms and agreements are defined that will be dealt with the participating countries of the FCPF.
The Association of Forest Communities of Petén (ACOFOP) partook on behalf of the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests and as an elected representative of Latin American civil society organizations. At the meeting, the opportunity was taken to request for the funds to be expedited for the implementation of REDD+ activities (Multi Donor Fund Trust, approved for 2020-2030) in Indigenous territories and local forest-dependent communities.
During the event, several countries presented their progress regarding the preparation as a country for REDD+ (R-packages) and mid-term reports. It was informed that, among the participating countries of the FCPF (47 in total), Vietnam has been the fifth country to sign an ERPA (forest carbon purchase order) with the World Bank, which is an achievement for climate change mitigation. In addition, the first verification of Mozambique, which was the first country to sign an ERPA, and verification of emission reductions under the FCPF is underway.
The World Bank’s Forest Carbon Partnership Facility (FCPF) event was held through a virtual meeting at the end of October.
