The Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests premieres its new project “Forests of Stories”, a podcast that aims to transmit the identity and culture of indigenous peoples and local communities of Mesoamerica, through stories told by the voices of indigenous and community members belonging to the various organizations that make up the Alliance.
This audio project was born as a result of the “Forests of People” campaign and as part of the celebration of the tenth anniversary of the AMPB. It has a format of short episodes between 2 and 10 minutes, each one represented by a different voice, organization, region or country of Mesoamerica.
Levi Sucre Romero, AMPB Coordinator, emphasizes that oral tradition is an invaluable medium for indigenous and local communities.
“Through stories, we transmit life lessons, coexistence with nature, cosmovision and political messages from generation to generation. Now we want to share some of that with the people of the city and other communities – through our stories, they can get to know us better,” commented Sucre.
All episodes will be accessible to the Deaf community on YouTube with closed captioning.
The first story
The first episode is 5:15 minutes long and is titled “The Tiger, the Cat and the Sheep”. The story is narrated by Alipio Achito, an elder belonging to the Emberá Querá indigenous community of Panama, who normally transmitted the stories every afternoon to the whole community. It begins with this episode as a tribute, after his death last December.
The tale was compiled by Militza Flaco, a young Emberá who belongs to AMPB’s youth movement.
This story and the next episodes will transport you to each of the indigenous peoples and local communities to learn about and enjoy the identity and essence they transmit. Visit the following links to listen to them through Spotify, Apple Podcasts and YouTube.
