AMPB territories build vision of future challenges in virtual exchange

Nov 13, 2020 | News

As part of the Mesoamerican Alliance of Peoples and Forests’ (AMPB) 10th anniversary, this Thursday, November 12th, member organizations held the Virtual Exchange on the Indigenous and Local Agenda.

The event’s purpose was to provide a space for reflection and discussion regarding the situation faced by indigenous territories and local communities before the recurrent social, political, and economic crisis that the region is experiencing, deepened today by the COVID-19 crisis. In the discussion, advances, achievements, difficulties, threats, and organizations’ challenges and territories were exchanged, to form a joint plan to face future challenges.

The post-pandemic scenario could have devastating effects on indigenous territories and local communities or, by contrast, could be an opportunity to reconsider government priorities in the region, including caring for the natural environment and adapting to climate change. Due to this, the discussion takes place with the certainty that dialogue and alliances are fundamental in the struggle to achieve a Mesoamerica free of inequality and social exclusion, with solid conservation mechanisms and an inclusive economy.

Thanks to these initiatives, we will soon be entering a period with new configurations that will impact the region.

The virtual discussion on the Indigenous and Community Agenda in Mesoamerica was organized by the PRISMA Foundation and AMPB.
